Indonesia international Asnawi Mangkualam has officially extended his tenure with Thailand’s Port FC, signing a landmark four-year contract that will keep him at the club until the conclusion of the 2028/2029 season.
This contract not only secures Asnawi’s place as a cornerstone of Port’s defensive line but also etches his name into the history books as the longest contract ever awarded to a foreign player in the Thai League 1, potentially allowing Asnawi to match the likes of Buriram United legend Andres Tunez, True Bangkok United duo Everton and Vander Luiz, and fellow Port defender Sergio Suarez as the longest-serving foreign player in the Thai League 1.
The extension marks a significant achievement for Asnawi, who joined Port in early 2024 after leaving Jeonnam Dragons in South Korea. His impact may have started off slow with a few appearances off the bench here and there, but in due time Asnawi’s influence within the Port starting line-up was profoundly felt, with the Indonesian international quickly becoming a key figure in the squad. Since his arrival, Asnawi has made 30 appearances, registering one goal and one assist, even while dealing with occasional injury challenges. His performances have won the trust of the club’s management and fans alike, highlighting his consistent contributions both defensively and offensively.
The announcement of the contract renewal was made via Port FC’s official Instagram account, accompanied by a statement of enthusiasm and encouragement:
“Port FC announces the contract extension of Asnawi Mangkualam Bahar. The Indonesian national team defender is extended for four more years, or until the end of the 2028/29 season. Stay and stay long! Let’s continue the fight together!”
Asnawi’s achievements extend beyond the pitch, as his historic contract serves as a testament to his rising influence in Southeast Asian football. The 24-year-old has etched himself as a success story for Indonesian players plying their trade outside the country, setting an example of professionalism and excellence. His remarkable record also highlights the growing recognition of Indonesian footballers in Thailand, a recognition that has been grown since the days of Victor Igbonefo, Irfan Bachdim, and Greg Nwokolo back in 2012/13.
Port’s decision to offer Asnawi such a long-term deal reflects their belief in his abilities and their confidence in his potential to be an integral part of the team’s success in the years to come.
