Impressive Selangor Stun Jeonbuk

Malaysia’s Selangor FC delivered a memorable 2-1 victory over South Korean giants Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors in their 2024/25 AFC Champions League Two Group H clash on Wednesday, taking control of the group standings with seven points, one ahead of Jeonbuk.

Though Jeonbuk started strong, Selangor seized key opportunities at the MBPJ Stadium in Petaling Jaya. In the 30th minute, Yohandry Orozco’s free-kick deflected off Umarbek Eshmurodov, allowing Harith Haiqal to score from close range. Selangor doubled their lead just two minutes later, as Nooa Laine won the ball, advanced upfield, and set up Ali Olwan, who coolly slotted past Kim Jeong-hoon.

Jeonbuk responded before halftime, with Kwon Chang-hoon’s header narrowing the deficit. In the second half, Nikola Jambor nearly extended Selangor’s lead, hitting the crossbar, and Jeonbuk pressed for an equalizer, with Park Jun-beom missing a key chance.

Despite Orozco’s late red card in stoppage time, Selangor held on to secure a valuable win, and marking only the fourth time that Jeonbuk had been beaten by a Southeast Asian side, and the first time that the South Koreans had lose to a Southeast Asian team from outside of Thailand, as their previous three defeats came at the hands of Buriram United (twice) and True Bangkok United.
