Own Goals Galore as Japan’s Perfect Record Came to an End

Japan’s perfect start to Group C of the 2026 FIFA World Cup AFC qualifiers third round came to an end as Australia held the Samurai Blue to a 1-1 draw at Saitama Stadium on Tuesday. Despite dominating large portions of the match, Japan found themselves trailing in the 58th minute due to an own goal by Shogo Taniguchi, who sliced a clearance past his own goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, following a cross from Australia’s Lewis Millar.

Australia, under new head coach Tony Popovic, managed to frustrate Japan’s attacking efforts, with their defense, led by Harry Souttar, standing firm throughout the first half. Despite Japan’s control of the game, they struggled to break through the Australian defense. Real Sociedad’s Takefusa Kubo and Liverpool’s Takumi Minamino both came close, but the final product was lacking.

Popovic, who made six changes to his side after their 3-1 victory over China, saw his team execute a disciplined defensive approach. Mitchell Duke had a rare opportunity for the Socceroos early in the game but missed the target.

Japan, seeking to maintain their winning streak, eventually found their equalizer in the 76th minute. Substitute Keita Nakamura made a surging run down the flank and delivered a low cross intended for Ayase Ueda, but it was Australian defender Cameron Burgess who inadvertently deflected the ball into his own net, leveling the score.

With the draw, Japan now has 10 points from four games, remaining unbeaten but no longer holding a perfect record. Australia, with five points, continues their resurgence under Popovic, earning four points since his appointment.

Both sides will look ahead to their remaining qualifiers, with Japan hoping to get back to winning ways and Australia aiming to build on their solid performances.
