Last-Gasp Goal Seals PSM’s Victory Over Stubborn Shan United

PSM Makassar notched their first victory of the 2024/25 ASEAN Club Championship after a late header from Abdul Rahman secured a 4-3 win over Myanmar’s Shan United in their Group A encounter on September 25th.

Nermin Haljeta and Aloisio Neto gave the Indonesian side a 2-0 advantage in the Matchday Two fixture at the Batakan Stadium in Balikpapan, but Shan United pulled one back through FC Osaka loanee Efrain Rintaro during first-half stoppage time.

The back-and-forth action continued in the second half, with Latyr Fall restoring PSM’s two-goal cushion. However, Shan United fought back with quick goals from Mark Sekyi and Moussa Bakayoko in a seven-minute span, leveling the score at 3-3.

Yuran Fernandes missed a penalty late in the match, hitting the post, but substitute Rahman came to PSM’s rescue with a header in the 91st minute, sending the home fans into celebration as they claimed all three points.

PSM controlled possession in the opening stages, but Shan United grew into the match, coming close with Hein Phyo Win’s header in the 21st minute and a long-range effort from Rintaro shortly after. PSM eventually capitalized on their dominance, with Victor Luiz setting up both Haljeta and Neto’s first-half goals with well-timed crosses into the box.

Despite taking a 2-1 lead into the break, PSM’s defense faltered, allowing Rintaro to score in added time. The second half saw Shan United continue to pressure, and they were rewarded when Sekyi and Bakayoko scored in quick succession. A VAR review confirmed Bakayoko’s equalizer after an initial offside ruling.

Although Fernandes missed a penalty in the 78th minute, PSM found their winner in stoppage time when Rahman connected with a Luiz cross to head home, securing the 4-3 victory and three crucial points.
