Defending champions and tournament hosts Qatar got their 2023 AFC Asian Cup campaign up and running with a comprehensive 3-0 win over Lebanon in Friday’s tournament opener at the Lusail Stadium.
Qatar thoroughly deserved their victory, dominating the game from start to finish. Akram Afif scored twice, and Almoez Ali netted the third goal, equaling Korea Republic’s Lee Dong-gook as the second-highest scorer in Asian Cup history. The defending champions set the early pace in Group A.
Qatar quickly made their presence felt, with Abdulaziz Hatem forcing an early save from Lebanon’s goalkeeper Mehdi Khalil. Despite their efforts, Qatar’s opening goal in the 6th minute was disallowed as Ali was flagged offside after evading his marker and slotting the ball past Khalil.
Lebanon gradually improved, with Ali Tneich and Hussein Al Zein creating threats. The match saw action at both ends, with Qatar forcing saves and Lebanon attempting counter-attacks. Afif had a close chance in the 31st minute, but his header hit the crossbar. However, he redeemed himself later in the half, capitalizing on Lebanon’s defensive lapse to score.
Lebanon fought back in the second half, with True Bangkok United’s Bassel Jradi almost catching Qatar off guard in the 47th minute. Qatar, however, extended their lead in the 56th minute, as Ali headed home Mohammed Waad’s cross. Afif sealed the impressive night for Qatar in added time with another goal.
Looking ahead, Qatar aims to build on their win against Tajikistan, while Lebanon seeks to bounce back against China on Wednesday.
