City Boys Pulverized by Southern Tigers in FA Cup Final Warm-Up

Kuala Lumpur City FC succumbed to a heavy 6-1 defeat away at Johor Darul Ta’zim in Monday’s Liga Super Malaysia game. Former Buriram United danger man Diogo notched a hat-trick as JDT made it 15 wins out of 15 matches in the current Liga Super campaign, as well as giving Kuala Lumpur a chastening lesson ahead of their meeting in the 2023 Malaysia FA Cup final on July 22nd.

Diogo opened the scoring in the 12th minute, taking advantage of an excellent Leandro Velazquez ball to incite cheers all over the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium.

Only 60 seconds later, JDT found themselves 2-0 up. Jordi Amat sent a long ball towards Arif Aiman, with the Malaysia international winger easily beating youngster Azim Al-Amin Kamaruddin in the Kuala Lumpur goal.

With JDT mercilessly having Kuala Lumpur at the back-foot, Diogo scored the Southern Tigers’ third goal in the 35th minute, thumping in a header from a Matthew Davies cross. One minute later Diogo’s hat-trick was complete, with the Brazilian striker firing low past Kamaruddin to make it 4-0 to JDT.

Matko Zirdum reduced the deficit for Kuala Lumpur with a close-ranged finish in the 57th minute, however JDT’s four-goal advantage was restored in the 86th minute through Safiq Rahim’s effort.

Last but not least, the cherry on top of JDT’s cake was complete in the the 88th minute, with Akhyar Rashid scoring JDT’s sixth goal to finish up the rout.

The thrashing does not bode well for Bojan Hodak’s Kuala Lumpur side, who were set to take on JDT once again in the FA Cup final later this month. The City Boys will have ample time to recover and prepare, though, as they will take on Terengganu FC on Friday and Negeri Sembilan FC on July 15th before the final.
