The PSS Sleman rebuild continues as the Liga 1 Indonesia side announced their ASEAN signing for the upcoming season – Filipino international goalkeeper Anthony Pinthus.
Pinthus, who last played for cash-strapped Philippine Football League giants United City FC, became PSS’ fifth new signing of the season, following Jonathan Bustos, Esteban Vizcarra, Kei Sano, and Brazilian defender Thales Lira.
25-year old Pinthus, who has Swiss heritage, was one of the many talented goalkeepers at the disposal of the Philippines national team, alongside the likes of Neil Etheridge, Michael Falkesgaard, Kevin Ray Mendoza, Julian Schwarzer, and Quincy Kammeraad, with experience playing in the AFC Champions League with United City back in the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Pinthus is projected to succeed departing goalkeeper Ega Rizky, as well as giving Muhammad Ridwan some competition in between the sticks.
“Anthony and Ridwan will make us more competitive. Even though he is still young at 25 years old, Pinthus has already gained a lot of experience both at the national team and club level,” said PSS general commissioner Rachmat Makkassau, as quoted from Sportstars, “With the ability, experience, and individual titles that Pinthus has won, I think that can be proof that he is worthy of filling the Super Elja goalkeeper sector.”
With the Liga 1 set to adopt a 5+1 foreign player quota that includes one ASEAN player, it seems that PSS are on course to complete their foreign quota well before the start of the 2023/24 campaign in early July, as the Super Elja seek to put a disappointing 16th placed finish from last season behind.
