2022/23 Liga 1 Season to Kick-Off on July 23rd, Piala Indonesia to Return

The Football Federation of Indonesia (PSSI) have announced the kick-off date for the upcoming 2022/23 Liga 1 Indonesia season on Monday. Additionally, the Piala Indonesia is set to make its return after a lenghty hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

After a two hour-long virtual meeting between the PSSI, league operators PT Liga Indonesia Baru (PT LIB), and representatives of the 18 Liga 1 clubs, it was decided that the 2022/23 league season will start on July 23rd and conclude in April 0f 2023.

The scheduling for the upcoming league season has already taken into account the international breaks that the Indonesia national team will participate in on September of 2022 and March of 2023, as well as the 2022 AFF Championship which will be held in December of this year.

“We have to take into consideration towards the national team’s agenda as well as other events that will take place during the 2022/23 season. A 23rd July kick-off has been agreed as the most ideal date for the league season to start for all Liga 1 teams. We have also done our coordination with the government, through the Ministry of Sports and Youth, Ministry of Health, the COVID-19 Task Force, and the Indonesian Police,” said PSSI chairman Mochamad Irawan, as quoted from the federation’s website.

Earlier last week, the PSSI have also announced the return of the Piala Indonesia after a 2 year-long hiatus. The tournament, whose winner will qualify into the AFC Cup, will kick-off on August of 2022 with 64 teams taking part in the first round. The 64 teams consist of the 18 Liga 1 teams, 28 teams from the Liga 2 Indonesia, and 18 teams from the Liga 3 Indonesia. While teams from the Liga 1 and the Liga 2 are taken from this season’s competitions, the Liga 3 teams taking part in this year’s Piala Indonesia will most likely be the teams who took part in last season’s national round that didn’t receive promotion tickets to the Liga 2.
