According to journalist Sergio Gonzalez, Lionel Messi is going to stay at Barcelona after this season.
Following all the events of the presidential elections at the club, where Joan Laporta has returned as president after winning the elections by a hefty margin, journalist Sergio Gonzalez, who is reportedly very close to Messi’s entourage, the Barca wizard and talisman is going to stay at Barcelona after this season.
Gonzalez tweeted:
“Se queda. No compren más relatos,” which translates to “He stays. Don’t buy any more stories.”
It has been a rather remarkable week for Barcelona fans with newly-elected president Joan Laporta capping it off his wonderful campaign with a massive win, putting an end to the era of the previous boards who have contributed to the turmoil of the club in recent years. Now there are vibrant, telling signs of hope and optimism in the air for the Catalan faithful.
Messi himself had participated in the elections to vote for the first time ever. With so much speculation having been bandied around about his departure, the convincing return of Laporta could well be a major turning point in the talisman’s prolonged transfer saga.
However, Laporta stated in his first speech following the election results has that he will do all that is possible to keep Messi within the realistically-achievable economic bounds of the club. Apparently Messi also reportedly congratulated Joan Laporta on his victory, which forebodes a hopeful indication that the president might be able to convince the Argentine not to pack his bags for Paris.
With Messi’s contract running out in June, the next few months will be crucial in deciding his future. However, if what Sergio Gonzalez says is true, there is plenty of cause for optimism.
