Iran captain Masoud Shojaei received his marching order in 81st minute after conceding his second yellow card and Iraq took advantage of his dismissal in added time.
Amjad Attwan’s cross from corner found Ala Abbas in far post and with Alireza Beiranvand sloppy reaction, his header secured the victory for Iraq.
Now Iraq sit at the top of group C table with 10 points and Iran are in third place with just 6 points.
Iran will play three out of four return leg matches at home and need all points desperately to survive their chances to secure their spot in next round.
