Five Things Malaysia Learned From Their Dramatic Win Over Indonesia

Malaysia pulled off a remarkable 3-2 win over Indonesia in the opening game of 2022 World Cup qualifying, with a goal in the final minute of stoppage time helping them steal three points from the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. Football Tribe Malaysia writer Amin Anas discusses five things that Harimau Malaya learned from this match:

Chaos

Supporters of the Malaysian team arriving at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium were greeted with hell before the match began. Excessive provocation by the home crowd led to fears for the safety of Malaysia supporters. It has been reported that several supporters have suffered minor injuries.

Three Naturalized Players Strike

The hosts came down with two naturalized players, Beto Goncalves, and Stefano Lilipaly. Meanwhile, Malaysia started with one, Pahang winger Mohamadou Sumareh. Goncalves and Sumareh each contributed two goals for their team but the last goal from Sumareh gave the victory for the Malayan Tigers.

High Security

The players and management team of the Tigers of Malaya were forced to board an armored car after having difficulty getting out of the stadium. Before the game started, players and management officials boarded the bus and arrived at the stadium peaceful. This is the third time the Malaysian team has enjoyed the 'comfort' of the armored car, following the incident at the 2010 AFF Cup finals and the 2011 SEA Games.

One Yellow Card

Although the match between two teams was tense, referee Ko Hyung Jin only gave one yellow card during the match. Malaysian defender, Corbin Ong became the only player to receive a booking in the 55th minute.

Sumareh The Hero

Entering in the 35th minute as a substitute for Hadin Azman, Sumareh score the equalizer for Malaysia with his first touch and give a winning goal in second-half injury time to give Malaysia three massive points.
