2018 AFF Cup – Laos vs Myanmar Match Preview

After a good start, Myanmar could be looking to pull of a shock and reach the knockout stages. Laos, meanwhile, had their hopes of qualification all but shattered after suffering consecutive defeats to the two group favourites, Malaysia and Vietnam.

Laos

Strengths: These have been admittedly few and far between for the home side today, but one thing to pick out is their ability to make the most of extremely limited ball position. The fact that they managed to fashion six shots and a goal at the Bukit Jalil Stadium despite only having 17% of the ball is notable if nothing else.

Weaknesses: Fragility at the back has to be a concern after the side shipped six goals in their opening two games – albeit against the two strongest sides in the group. Myanmar showed the potency of their attack last time out, meaning that this weakness could come back to bite them.

Player to Watch – Outthilath Nammakoth

Despite being only 22 years old, Nammakoth is Laos’ oldest and most experienced option in goal. Given the fragility of the defence in front of him, Laos’ number 12 will need to have an inspired performance

Myanmar

Strengths: The side showed excellent attacking flair against Cambodia, managing more goals than Malaysia did against the side on the opening day, even without star man Aung Thu. The manner in which Myanmar dominated possession and managed a total of 23 shots will also be very encouraging.

Weaknesses: Myanmar don’t travel well, and haven’t won any of their four away fixtures in 2018. This disparity in home and away form may be a worry for them going forward.

Player to Watch – Hliang Bo Bo

The 22 year old Yadanarbon forward scored twice in the last match against Cambodia, and will need to be on it again if the side look to get past Laos in what could be a tougher match. The side will look to sit in a defensive posture and stifle Myanmar’s creative talents, making his contribution from midfield even more important.

Prediction: Laos 1-3 Myanmar
