Welcome to our new feature on Football Tribe, looking back at the history of the ongoing AFF Cup. Today, we remember the best – either the most remarkable or most important – goals in the history of this competition. Read and watch our writer’s picks below:
Indonesia
Year: 2010
Match: Indonesia v Philippines, Semi-Final Second Leg
Goalscorer: Cristian Gonzales
One of the best goals scored by Indonesia's first-ever naturalized player, Cristian Gonzales, for the national team. The 2010 AFF Cup his first and last with The Garuda. Gonzales showed his ability to keeping the ball under his control, winning a duel against two Philippines players outside the penalty box before take his first attempt low-range shot into The Azkals' net. His shot was blocked by one of the defenders, but the ball luckily found Gonzales' foot again, and with a little dribble the Uruguayan-born striker made enough space to blast a powerful one with his left foot and saw the ball fly through the Philippines' net. Today's Cardiff City goalkeeper, Neill Etheridge, can't reach the ball which perfectly placed in the top corner of his goal...
Steven Danis
Thailand
Year: 2014
Match: Thailand vs Malaysia, Final First Leg
Goalscorer: Kroekrit Thaweekarn
When talking about memorable Suzuki Cup goals there is many that come to mind, for example, Pipat Thonkanya's volley from Datsakorn Thonglao dinking assist during the 2007 final, for example, or Chanathip Songkrasin's long-range stunner at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium in 2014 which confirmed the title for Thailand.
However, one that deserves the labelled "best goal" is Thailand's 2nd goal against Malaysia in the first leg of the 2014 final. The move, which perfectly captures the free-flowing attacking football under head coach Kiatisuk Senamuang, started from left-back Peerapat Notchaiya who played a penetrating pass towards Kroekrit Thaweekarn. The left-winger then exchanged quick passes with teammates before getting onto the end of Chanathip Songkrasin's through ball for a simple tap-in, all in a matter of seconds.
Obb Deewajin
Vietnam
Year: 2008
Match: Vietnam vs Thailand, Final Second Leg
Goalscorer: Le Cong Vinh
It may not be the most beautiful goal in Vietnam's history in this tournament, but it was certainly the most important one. This goal bought Vietnam the first and only AFF Cup trophy to date. Le Cong Vinh got on the end of Minh Phuong's freekick in added time and scored from a header to take Vietnam to glory.
Tran Tien
Malaysia
Year: 2o10
Match: Malaysia vs Indonesia, Final First Leg
Goalscorer: Safee Sali
Clashes between these two rivals are frequent and often very entertaining. At the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup final, Malaysia was under pressure and in search of goals in the first half, as both teams were seen playing safely. In the second half, Norshahrul Idlan Talaha's solo move went past three Indonesian defenders from the right side of the field before making a short pass to Safee Sali for the first goal. This goal is remembered because of the brilliant play by Norshahrul and easy tap from Safee Sali to trick the goalkeeper. And because of this goal, Malaysia won the AFF Suzuki Cup for the first time.
