AFF Cup 2018 – Philippines vs Singapore Match Preview

Philippines

Strengths – The number of European born players the side have at their disposal is certainly a benefit for the Azkals, giving them a uniquely physical edge over their neighbors. This European physicality and discipline was said to have attracted Sven-Goran Eriksson to the job as head coach.

Weaknesses – The side have gone through three head coaches in just a matter of months. Scott Cooper, who took over the side after the resignation of Terry Butcher, took the side to a training camp in Bahrain under the assumption that he would be leading the side at this tournament, only to have his work undermined by the appointment of Eriksson. This managerial stability may be costly for the Philippines.

Player to Watch – Neil Etheridge

Without question, Neil Etheridge is the most prestigious player in the Azkal’s squad currently. The goalkeeper became a trailblazer not only for his country, but for the region as a whole when he earned promotion to the Premier League with Cardiff City. Currently the only player from South-East Asia starring in a top European league currently, Etheridge has the capacity to go on and become an icon for his nation.

Singapore

Strengths – With captain Hariss Harun in the middle, the side are known to be very solid in the middle of midfield. Indonesia had almost no room to play in, and the creative talents of Evan Dimas and Stefano Lilipaly were entirely nullified by the Lion’s discipline and shape.

Weaknesses – Despite beating Indonesia, the side effectively ceeded possession to the visitors, ending the home match with only 38% possession. Such pragmatic tactics can carry a risk, as even momentarily losing concentration against a physically imposing side like the Azkals could be costly.

Player to Watch – Gabriel Quak

After spending the last domestic season with Siam Navy FC in the Thai League, Gabriel Quak has had an excellent start at the AFF Cup. He made a crucial contribution to his side’s goal in the 1-0 victory over Indonesia, and his pace and dribbling ability could be a real asset for Singapore on the counter attack.

Prediction: Low scoring draw, potentially 0-0 or 1-1
