Persib Extend Lead in Tight Title Race

Persib Bandung extended their lead atop the Indonesian Liga 1 table this weekend with a tight 1-0 away victory over Borneo, courtesy of a goal from Ghozali Siregar. This result allows the side to open up a five-point lead over second-placed Madura United in what was previously an incredibly tight title race.

The 2014 Champions are now well on course to securing their second league title, under the guidance of former Johor Darul Ta’zim manager Mario Gomez, who has worked as a journeyman across Asia after spells as assistant to Hector Cuper at clubs such as Valencia and Inter Milan.

Their bid for the title was helped favorable results elsewhere. Madura United lost 2-0 to Arema FC in the East Java derby, and remain in second place. Third-placed Bali United played out a 1-1 draw away at surprise packages Barito Putera while defending champions Bhayangkara were beaten 2-0 by Persela Lamongan.

The only other team in the top five to pick up maximum points this weekend was Persija, who managed a 1-0 victory over relegation-threatened PSIS Semarang.
