Thailand kicks off their 2018 Asian Games campaign with a Group B match against Qatar in Cibinong, Indonesia. After coming fourth in the tournament’s prior edition in South Korea four years ago, the young War Elephants face an uphill battle to emulate the successes of the generation that came before them.
A slight sense of pessimism has settled in amongst the Thai camp, and the shadow of 2014’s highly successful side continues to hang over the team. An impressive 4-0 victory over Nepal will have eased the nerves somewhat heading into this match, but Qatar remains a daunting prospect with the support of their now world-famous Aspire Academy.
Coach Worawoot Srimaka has called upon his side not to fear their Middle Eastern opponents, as reported this morning by the Bangkok Post.
The squad that was selected remains a point of contention ahead of today’s encounter, with excellent players such as FC Tokyo U23 star Jakkit Wachpirom and highly rated Port FC left-back Kevin Deeromram left out of the final 23. Additionally, striker Chenrop Samphaodi continues to captain the side and is expected to lead the line for the War Elephants, despite finding opportunities limited this season at his club, SCG Muangthong United.
Thailand’s excellent run to the semi-final stage in the 2014 tournament gave rise to stars such as Chanathip Songkrasin, Tanaboon Kesarat, and Sarach Yooyen among others, most of whom now make up one of the strongest sides the senior national team has ever fielded. Thai fans and the media back home will likely be looking for others to emerge in the same way as well, as this tournament provides the ideal opportunity for those performing well in the domestic league to further elevate their status.
Whether this expectation can be a motivating force or an additional weight upon the players’ shoulders remains to be seen.
Group B also features the likes of Bangladesh and Uzbekistan, who are also set to face off this afternoon.
