SIDE TRIP TO GIRONA
In contrast to the grandeur of FC Barcelona and the Camp Nou, a visit to the nearby town of Girona and its small stadium will let you experience a completely different atmosphere without leaving Catalunya. If Girona FC have an afternoon match, this can even be accomplished as day trip.
The club accomplished their first promotion to LaLiga’s Primera Division in 2017, and their exciting top flight debut has generated great enthusiasm amongst local fans. The Estadi Montilivi is easily reached in a 30-minute walk across town from the station, but take care to purchase tickets early as many games sell out.
Fans with an interest in Romanesque architecture should take some time to enjoy the Girona Cathedral or the nearby Sant Pere de Galligants, both of which are located in the centre of the city.
The Alta Velocidad
Spain’s high-speed trains are fast, reliable and cheap. A ticket to Girona costs a mere €17, including seat reservations, and the journey lasts about 40 minutes. Tickets can be booked at the station, but it’s a good idea to reserve at least one day in advance as popular routes often sell out.
