Africa’s AFCON could be held in Asia to boost revenue

The African Football Federation (CAF) will discuss a proposal to hold the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) outside their region in the future.

According to Ghanasoccer.net, he plan is a reccommend from CAF’s Marketing and TV team on Wednesday in order to increase revenue and attract new partners.

It also recommended the hosting of the AFCON 2023 by countries outside Africa as well as to expand the tournament from 16 to 24 and invite three or four teams from other continents.

‘”The possibility to host the AFCON Final Tournament by countries outside the African continent,” read a statement on the point three of the CAF marketing committee recommendation.

“Like China, USA, or Qatar to host the AFCON 2023 since all required infrastructure will already be implemented for the FIFA World Cup 2022.”

The expansion idea was inspired by the UEFA European Championship last year which was considered as a success by African observers.
