Beijing Guoan appoint former Bayer Leverkusen manager Roger Schmidt

Chinese Super League outfit Beijing Guoan has appointed former Bayer Leverkusen manager Roger Schmidt as their head coach.

The club made an official statement on Saturday, saying that Schmidt will be unveiled on July 1. The 50-year-old manager has reportedly signed a two-and-a-half year deal with the Chinese outfit.

Schmidt is best known for managing Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg as well as German side Bayer Leverkusen. He was sacked by Bayer Leverkusen in March following a 6-2 defeat against Borussia Dortmund.

The German manager will replace Spanish manager Jose Gonzalez at Beijing Guoan. Gonzalez lost his job after a bad start to the 2017 season which left the team seventh in the league table.
