Japan finished third in Group D, behind Italy on goal difference but their record ensures they will progress to Last 16 as one of the four best third-placed nations.

The Europeans made a bright start, going two up in just seven minutes. The first goal came in the third minute when Orsolini volleyed home a cross from the left by Matteo Pessina.
