Shunmugham was an irreplaceable part of the Singapore side in both the historic 1998 and 2004 triumphant AFF Championship (then Tiger Cup) campaigns. He played in every single game in both tournaments.

He also played in two SEA Games, reaching the semi-finals in both Jakarta 1997 and Brunei 1999.

The defender won 115 caps in total for The Lions.
