New Zealand striker Shane Smeltz signs as marquee player for Borneo FC

Indonesian Liga 1 side Pusamania Borneo FC have announced the signing of New Zealand international striker Shane Smeltz as a marquee player.

The 35-year-old forward had been playing in the Malaysian Super League last season with Kedah FA before the announcement on the club’s Facebook account on Saturday.

Smeltz was a part of New Zealand squad in an unbeaten-campain during the 2010 World Cup, where he famously scored a goal in a memorable 1-1 draw against 2006 World Cup champions Italy.

The Germany-born striker has played mainly in the A-League with Perth Glory and Sydney FC, although he has had stints in England and Turkey.

He has also won multiple awards throughout his career including the 2007 and 2008 Oceania Footballer of the Year as well as two A-League Golden Boots.
