AFC Champions League: Victories for Al Rayyan and Al Fateh

Qatari outfit Al Rayyan moved to the top of Group D with a 3-1 win over Persepolis at home.

Even though the visitors scored in the sixth minute via Mehdi Taremi, Al Rayyan’s striker Rodrigo scored a brace to turn things around for his team. Sergio Garcia put the icing on the cake with a third in the 88th minute.

Al Hilal salvaged a point after they came back from a goal behind with ten men to draw with Al Wahda 2-2 in a hard-fought battle.

Al Wahda looked on course to secure their first win of the 2017 tournament when Balazs Dzsudzsak scored to make it 2-1 in the 54th minute and Al Hilal’s Nawaf Al Abid was handed his second yellow just six minutes later.

But the visitors fought till the end and it was Omar Khirbin who scored from close range to equalize late in the game.

In Group B action, Al Fateh made history by winning their first AFC Champions League clash. The Saudi Arabian club eased past Al Jazira 3-1 at home.

Ali Al-Zaqan was on form in Al Hasa, as the forward netted twice for the home side. The win takes them to four points, one behind Lekhwiya SC, while the woes continue for Al Jazira, who have lost all three matches so far.

In the other match of Group B, Lekhwiya SC earned a 1-1 draw with Esteghlal Khuzestan. It was the first dropped points of the competition for Esteghlal after two convincing wins.

The Iran club, however, still remains at the top of Group B, with Qatar’s Lekhwiya SC in second.
