Mohamed Salah set tongues wagging on social media when he appeared to take a veiled swipe at Arsenal following their 2-2 draw with Aston Villa on Saturday, a result which left Liverpool six points clear at the top of the Premier League.
On Saturday, Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League on Saturday after Darwin Nunez netted two last-gasp goals in injury time to seal a heart-pumping 2-0 win over a recalcitrant Brentford. The Gunners had the chance to close the gap in the late kick-off but could only muster a draw against the Villans after squandering a two-goal lead in the second half.
As if he harbored the intention to rub salt into the wounds of Liverpool’s title rivals, the Egyptian ace uploaded a snap of himself and match-winner Nunez to Instagram just six minutes after the final whistle blew at the Emirates Stadium. The pair looked in high spirits as they prepared for take-off ahead of their flight back to Merseyside.
The post was caption-less, leaving fans speculating whether the timing of it was intentional. “Proper s***housery from Salah there,” one supporter wrote on X, while another commented: “Salah knows exactly what he’s doing here.”
Liverpool were made to work hard at Brentford and looked to be heading for their third-successive draw in the league before second-half substitute Nunez broke the deadlock at 91 minutes. Since his first Premier League campaign back in 2022/23, only Jhon Duran (eight) has scored more goals from the bench than Nunez (seven).
Arsenal, meanwhile, raced into a 2-0 lead against former coach Unai Emery’s Villa, with Gabriel Martinelli grabbing his side’s first goal 10 minutes before the interval and Kai Havertz doubling their lead 10 minutes after the restart. However the visitors retaliated almost instantly, with a goal from Youri Tielemans scoring on the hour-mark before Ollie Watkins equalised on 68 minutes.
The results mean Arne Slot’s men are now six points clear of the Gunners, who have played a game more. It puts the Reds in pole position to clinch their second Premier League crown, five years after their first under Jurgen Klopp.
