Intercontinental Cup 2024 : India vs Syria, men in blue desperate for a win

India is set to face Syria in a crucial encounter tonight in the Intercontinental Cup 2024. After a disappointing goalless draw against Mauritius in their first match, the Blue Tigers are in desperate need of a win to stay in contention for the title.

India will have to improve their build-up play in midfield and their ability to create chances from open play. They had only one shot on target against Mauritius, and against the Syrians, they will face a sterner test. Liston Colaco and Manvir Singh, in particular, had disappointing outings last week, and as India searches for goals in the post-Sunil Chhetri era, it is upon their shoulders that the burden of goal-scoring ought to fall.

Marquez could make a few changes to the lineup for this game as well, as he comes to terms with the players that he has at his disposal. India have this game and two more FIFA international windows in October and November before the all-important AFC Asian Cup qualifiers begin in March, so experimentation could be necessary to determine what their best team is before those competitive fixtures.

Syria beat Mauritius 2-0 on Friday, which means they hold a slight advantage heading into the final game as the Eagles of Qasioun require only a draw to claim the trophy.
Syria has a long history of playing tournaments in India, but the title has always evaded them. The West Asians lost back-to-back Nehru Cup finals to India in 2007 and 2009 before finishing fourth in 2012.
Syria ended in third place in their last trip to India in the 2019 Intercontinental Cup. But for the Blue Tigers to deny them a first silverware on Indian soil, they must end a winless streak stretching back to November last year.
“It will be a difficult game for both sides. It’s a friendly game, but the team who wins the game wins the trophy. We expect to play a good game and win the tournament,” said India head coach Manolo Mrquez, who celebrated his 56th birthday on Saturday.
