This would be the straw that broke the camel\u2019s back, causing Manchester United fans to rip into Erik ten Hag after he callously referenced Manchester City in his post match press conference to save face for himself after the Red Devils dropped points against Brentford.<\/p>\n
The Red Devils manager was desperately clutching at a straw after watching his side stumble to a 1-1 draw away to a stubborn Brentford side, as Thomas Frank’s gallant men clearly dominated the Dutchman\u2019s motley crew from start to finish, having 31 shots on goal and recording no less than 85 touches in the Red Devils\u2019 penalty area \u2013 a Premier League record, no less.<\/p>\n
A hapless Ten Hag, 54, admitted he was far from satisfied with his side’s display at the G-Tech Community Stadium, which leaves the Red Devils slumped in sixth. However, he attempted to dodge the bullet instead of taking responsibility for his team\u2019s lackluster performance, comparing his side’s struggles with City’s previous 3-1 away victory over the Bees, besides also alluding to Liverpool\u2019s match against Brentford.<\/p>\n
“Don’t lower the performances from Brentford,” Ten Hag complained. “I have seen them against Man City and City was also lucky to win that game. And against Liverpool, in the first 35 minutes Brentford should have taken the lead, so don’t express this.<\/p>\n
“We should have done this better. I’m not happy with the performance, there is no misunderstanding, the players are also disappointed by the performance and we should be consistent in the game, go in the game, perform and show more aggressiveness.”<\/p>\n
After hearing his words, United fans lost all patience with Ten Hag using other teams’ performances as an example to justify his side’s incompetence.<\/p>\n
\u201cTypical small club\/manager mentality,” one fan wrote.<\/p>\n
A second added: \u201cThis brother cannot be serious.”<\/p>\n
A third United fan labelled Ten Hag as \u201cshameless,\u201d with another in agreement, writing: \u201cCity win their games when up against it, have a style of play and a manager that knows his best team. We are miles away from even competing yet alone challenging.\u201d<\/p>\n
Others were tactical in their comments, pointing out how City dominated Brentford in terms of possession and shots on goal – in stark contrast to United’s dismal display.<\/p>\n
