Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips was absolutely sensational in his match against Croatia and his brilliant assist laid on England\u2019s winning goal for Raheem Sterling as the Croats were beaten 1-0 by the Three Lions at Wembley on Sunday.<\/p>\n
25-year-old Phillips was undoubtedly the star of the show, despite UEFA\u2019s official MOTM award going to Sterling. Phillips though has been exuberantly hailed by fans and pundits alike after a display full of maturity despite it being only his ninth cap.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe\u2019s been our best player, quite easily. He\u2019s been brilliant,\u201d said pundit Jermaine Jenas after Phillips\u2019 display at Wembley.<\/p>\n
With Declan Rice dropping deeper and offering protection to the defence,\u00a0Phillips\u00a0was able to play in a more advanced role.<\/p>\n
And such was Phillips\u2019 performance that Real Madrid have taken immediate notice of \u2018The Yorkshire Pirlo\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n A recent report from Defensa Central<\/em> claims that Madrid will monitor Phillips for the rest of Euro 2020, with the report referring to Phillips as \u2018Lord of Midfield\u2019 after putting Real star Luka Modric in the shade for 90 minutes.<\/p>\n Phillips recorded a 94% passing accuracy, with all of his long passes finding their target, besides being successful with two of his three attempted take-ons, which is why he is firmly locked in on Madrid\u2019s radar.<\/p>\n New Real boss\u00a0Carlo Ancelotti is keen to strengthen his midfield for next season with the Italian said to have a big interest in Manuel Locatelli and Nicolo Barella, and now Phillips may well find himself on that list.<\/p>\n Phillips\u2019 market value of \u20ac30m, according to the Spanish outlet, does look woefully low, given that Leeds turned that down for him two years ago. Leeds though will be desperate to get him quickly tied to a new deal on his return from international duty.<\/p>\n The Leeds-born star\u2019s contract runs until 2024 after penning the five-year contract in 2019. It\u2019s most likely that the Whites will have to review that deal, in the region of \u00a330,000 a week, this summer if Phillips\u2019 imperious form should continue for the remainder of the tournament.<\/p>\n Having grown in stature over the last three years, Leeds\u2019 gamble to turn down Aston Villa and keep Phillips at the start of their Championship title-winning campaign has indeed proved a masterstroke.<\/p>\n
