The \u2018Special One\u2019, Jos\u00e9 Mourinho, has been shown the exit by Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur after just 17 months in charge, the club announced in an official statement on Monday.<\/p>\n
The Portuguese manager was appointed by Spurs in November 2019 to replace Mauricio Pochettino, and had penned a deal until the end of the 2022-23 season.<\/p>\n
58-year-old Mourinho was given the sack, not unexpectedly, following a prolonged run of dismal performances that leaves the North London club out of contention for the top-4, dangling mid-table seventh in the Premier League table, and five points off the UEFA Champions League places.<\/p>\n
Mourinho’s last game in charge was Friday’s 2-2 draw away in the league at Everton.<\/p>\n
Tottenham Hotspur Chairman Daniel Levy said:<\/p>\n
“Jos\u00e9 and his coaching staff have been with us through some of our most challenging times as a Club.<\/p>\n
“Jos\u00e9 is a true professional who showed enormous resilience during the pandemic.<\/p>\n
“On a personal level, I have enjoyed working with him and regret that things have not worked out as we both had envisaged.<\/p>\n
“He will always be welcome here and we should like to thank him and his coaching staff for their contribution,” Levy added.<\/p>\n
The club added that former player Ryan Mason will take over First Team training on Monday as Tottenham face Manchester City in the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday with the club bidding to win its first piece of silverware in 13 years.<\/p>\n
It does appear a tad odd though that the Portuguese manager has not been allowed to at least helm the squad for the Carabao Cup Final this Sunday before being given the sack.<\/p>\n
Mourinho and his representatives were not immediately available for comment when contacted by CNN.<\/p>\n
