Ex-Red Devils defender Rio Ferdinand understands why Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is desperate to land England international Jadon Sancho, but again insists there are other more pressing issues for United to address.<\/p>\n
Ferdinand still believes that the Red Devils need to be prioritising the signing of a new centre-half, saying that the addition of another winger will not solve their \u2018fundamental problems\u2019.<\/p>\n
Despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer being already being under pressure with numerous calls made on him to bring defensive reinforcement into his team\u2019s ranks, the Norwegian has been turning a deaf ear to them, stating obdurately that he has no issue at all with his current options on the back of a fortuitous last minute 3-2 victory over Brighton.<\/p>\n
Ferdinand is nonplussed at the stance that Splskjaer has taken, with the former United star convinced that Solskjaer is exploring the wrong transfer avenues. While he can appreciate why the Norwegian is targeting Sancho, he feels too much time is being squandered on a long-running saga\u00a0that has diverted attention away from more pressing needs.<\/p>\n
Ferdinand told BT Sport:\u00a0\u201cYeah, definitely [there are question marks in front of David de Gea].<\/p>\n
\u201cThe centre-back area, first game of the season you\u2019re looking for someone to set their stall out in defensive areas. They did anything but that.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was slow, it was cumbersome, and I picked out three examples for goals. I can see so many different mistakes, areas there can be improvements.<\/p>\n
\u201cListen, you look at Liverpool, the best team in the land. Issues in goalkeeping areas – Alisson, big signing. Issues at centre-back? [Virgil] van Dijk, bang, they deal with it.<\/p>\n
\u201cManchester United have not done that. This is not an issue we\u2019re seeing that\u2019s just happened the other day.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want Jadon Sancho to come to Man United, he\u2019s a generational talent, he\u2019s someone who will get fans off their seats, a Man United player.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut does he solve the fundamental problems that I see happening with this team?<\/p>\n
\u201cYes they\u00a0had a fantastic goals-against record last season but there are moments in games, or before games even.<\/p>\n
\u201cAre you looking across the tunnel across that line thinking \u2018I\u2019m going to have to be at my absolute best to get a chance against this Manchester United team?\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think so – and that\u2019s a problem for me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Although United collected their first Premier League points of the season with their away win over Brighton, it was clearly a narrow win secured only with the last kick of the game after the final whistle had initially been blown, not to mention the having Seagulls having struck the woodwork on five occasions.<\/p>\n
High time for Solskjaer to get off his butt to address the pressing issues that have been brought to attention.<\/p>\n
