Premier League leaders Liverpool have understandably reacted to the city\u2019s mayor, Joe Anderson, calling for an end to the football season and expressed their disappointment to his comments that the season should not be re-started even behind closed doors because of the risk of fans gathering outside Anfield in the event of a continuation.<\/p>\n
Liverpool were running ahead with 25 points clear of closest rivals Manchester City when the league was suspended in March and need only two wins to secure their first Premier League title in 30 years.<\/p>\n
Mayor Joe Anderson told the BBC on Thursday that health and safety constituted the bottom line and the best thing to do would be to declare the season over and hand the title to Liverpool as the deserving champions.<\/p>\n
\u201cEven if it was behind closed doors, there\u2019d be many thousands of people who would turn up outside Anfield,\u201d said Anderson, who is himself a fan of Liverpool\u2019s city rivals, Everton.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s not many people who would respect what we were saying and stay away from the ground, a lot of people would come to celebrate so I think it\u2019s a non-starter.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it would be really difficult for the police to keep people apart and maintain social distancing if they were going to celebrate outside Anfield. It would be farcical.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Reds have retaliated in a statement saying there was \u201ca lack of evidence to support such claims\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn recent weeks, we have engaged with supporters\u2019 groups who have informed us of their determination to respect social distancing measures,\u201d the club added.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the event of a resumption of football being announced, we would continue to work with them and other key stakeholders in keeping with our collective desire to achieve this crucial objective.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mark Roberts, the national lead for football policing, said on Wednesday that police want to be able to cancel the season if fans did not respect social-distancing guidelines once matches returned.<\/p>\n
Premier League clubs are set to meet on Friday to discuss ways to finish the season, with some already back in individual training.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
