Ajax led the Eredivisie table on goal difference over AZ Alkmaar with nine matches left.<\/p>\n
However, Ajax general manager Edwin van der Sar said the decision not to award the league title was understandable.<\/p>\n
“As players and coaches, you want to win the title on the field.<\/p>\n
“We have been top of the table throughout the season, so it is a pity we haven’t been able to become champion but given the situation we are in, it is understandable.<\/p>\n
“There are a lot more important matters than football right now,” he told the club’s television channel.<\/p>\n
All is not lost for Ajax as they will compete in the Champions League next season, while AZ Alkmaar had to go through a preliminary round.<\/p>\n
Third-place Feyenoord will qualify for the Europa League group stages, with fourth-placed PSV and fifth-placed Willem II entering the qualifying stages of the competition, subject to UEFA’s approval.<\/p>\n
The Eredivisie Women has also been cancelled with no title winner.<\/p>\n
KNVB also said it has consulted with the parties involved and asked them to vote for “no relegation and no promotion” or “relegation and promotion” – but the result returned “no clear preference”, forcing KNVB to make the final decision.<\/p>\n
“Because many rounds still have to be played in the competitions, we believe that we cannot apply promotion or relegation and that is decided.”<\/p>\n
The decision was condemned by second division league leaders Cambuur Leeuwarden, whom are 11 points clear at the top of the table.<\/p>\n
