Club Brugge finally declares Belgian champion

Belgian Pro League finally declared Club Brugge as an offical champions, ending the league without resuming the season.

Brugge had a 15-point lead and qualify for Champions League group next season.

“The general assembly voted to confirm the standings after 29 rounds as the final outcome of the season,” a Pro League statement said.

Belgium became the first country to end its season after weeks of discussion following the COVID-19 outbreak that forced the league to be suspended.

KAA Gent finished second in the league, followed by Sporting Charleroi, Royal Antwerp and Standard Liege as they qualify for the Europa League.

Waasland-Beveren is relegated immediately but the club said they would challenge the decision.

Despite the league ended prematurely, Belgian Cup final is going to be held between Club Brugge and Antwerp, but have yet to set a date.

The new season is scheduled to start on Aug. 7, after Belgium government suspend all sports events until the end of July.
