It has a second name: Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat, or Pokrovsky Cathedral. Saint Basil’s is not one, but nine churches with 11 domes. The church was ordered to be built by none other than Ivan the Terrible to commemorate his victory over the Kazan Khanate. The multicoloured domes, as most historians believe, were created and built in 1561 by two architects: Barma and Postnik Yakovlev. However, some argue that Barma was simply an alias of Postnik Yakovlev, and the domes were a one-man job. Yet another hypothesis asserts that the church complex was created by some unknown Italian architect. They say that Postnik and Barma (or Postnik alone) were blinded once the construction was finished, to make sure they never build something as beautiful again somewhere else. But historians will not buy this, knowing that Postnik would build the Kazan Kremlin after St. Basil’s was built. Saint Basil’s Cathedral has museum status. Visitors are admitted with or without a tour guide.

3.GUM (department store)

Muscovites go to the GUM to have a good time, not just to shop. It is also customary to schedule dates by the fountain.

The classical ice cream, which is familiar to any Muscovite from early age, can be definitely found in GUM. The sales of this ice cream started on July 3, 1954. In the basement of the store a special ice cream workshop was opened. In the beginning, only plombir (rich ice cream) and crème brûlée were prepared there, later on some other kinds of ice cream were introduced. The workshop is still operating, people who work there thoroughly keep the recipes and the production secrets of the ice cream in waffle cups.

Some time ago in GUM there were elegant saleswomen with ice cream wagons, where you could see a lot of crunchy waffle cups with traditional flavours: rich cream, crème brûlée, cream with chocolate crisps, melon. Now you can see big kiosk in GUM, where the assortment has become bigger: along with the classic flavours you can find cherry, pistachio, and Eskimo ice cream in foil paper. The predecessor of the first Russian university – the Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy – was established in late 17th century next to Nikolskaya Ulitsa, in the Bogoyavlensky Pereulok (Bogoyavlensky Lane), thanks to the efforts of writer Symeon Polotsky. The building burned down before the theatre could open. The effort was resumed by an Englishman, Michael Maddocks. His theatre stood for 25 years, but then also burned down in 1805. Following the 1812 war with Napoleon, the theatre was included in the general restoration plan for Moscow. However, the new building (1825) designed by Joseph Bové, was again destroyed by fire in 1853. The theatre was hastily reconstructed for the coronation of Alexander II (1856, architect: Albert Kavos). The building would subsequently see a few more renovations, but only minor external changes were made. The most recent and most serious renovation was from 2005 to 2011. The company continued to give performances at its New Stage next door, specially built in 2002 to keep the theatre in business during the renovation.

6.Gorky Park

Moscow’s main park, Gorky Park boasts a long and eventful history and a plethora of amusements. It has been Muscovites’ favourite park for nearly a hundred years. This land was designated as the central municipal dump in 1900, and remained a dump for 20 years. Vladimir Lenin ordered the dump removed in 1921, and the land here and in the neighbouring Neskuchny Garden made suitable for the 1st National Agricultural and Primary-Industrial Exhibition. The area was cleaned and landscaped, and pavilions were built for the exhibition, shaping the current outline of Gorky Park. The park was intended as a spacious recreation and amusement spot for locals and visitors. There were amusement rides in the park from the mid-1980s on, but they were relocated elsewhere in the city in 2012, and Gorky Park was re-conceptualized as a family recreation spot with sports fields, bike and boat rental, Pioneer summer cinema, ping-pong tables and countless cafés. Celebrations and festivals are staged here during the warm season, devoted to culinary arts, kids’ education, sports and many other subjects.

7.Museum of Cosmonautics

This is a serious museum of space exploration, boasting an incredible collection of exhibits that people of any age will find interesting. Both the building and the collection of the State Tretyakov Gallery, opened in the late 1800s, were constantly changed and expanded. The core collection is made up of the paintings collected by Pavel Tretyakov, an eminent local patron of the arts. When his private collection became too large for an ordinary home, the collector decided to have a gallery built, where to put all his art treasures on display for everyone to see. It is important to remember that Tretyakov collected the paintings of people he knew or was friends with, so consider hiring a tour guide.
