Los Cafeteros took control of the game for the first time but could not find a winner.

Penalties, inevitably, were required to find a winner. England blinked first when Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson saw his effort pushed around the post by Arsenal keeper David Ospina.

But Mateus Uribe thumped the bar with Colombia’s next kick, allowing Kieran Trippier to level. Carlos Bacca was then denied by Pickford before Dier stroked home the winner to give England their first penalty triumph since beating Spain at the 1996 European Championships.

England’s strength is in attacking midfielders. There aren’t any elite out-and-out defenders, so it makes sense to utilise the on-ball abilities of the ‘quite good’ ones that the nation has. Playing a back three helps brings this out, while also adding an extra body to help defend close to the box.

Late in extra-time, England started to pick up – mostly because Colombia were tired and gaps started to open up. Without these gaps, bringing Jamie Vardy on earlier would have been unlikely to work.

So, yes, perhaps the best option would have been to embrace English nature and lump it long for a bit. At best, it could have led to winning loose balls high up the pitch; at worst, it may have been a betrayal of the system, but it would have forced Colombia to think differently.

2. Had Southgate planned this? Were England better off losing? Was Pickford really good enough to be England’s No.1?

But the Sunderland-born stopper answered his critics in fine fashion tonight, securing his place in England legend by becoming the first Three Lions keeper to save a World Cup penalty since David Seaman.

In the game, the 24-year-old had very little to do and could not be held accountable for Mina’s leveller. But, in extra time, he produced arguably the save of the tournament by pawing out Uribe’s rasping drive from distance which looked destined to nestle in the top corner and break English hearts.

His save deep into stoppage time from Mateus Uribe’s volley was outstanding and deserved better than a concession from the corner. Yet the 24-year-old reserved his best for the shootout. His block with his left hand from Carlos Bacca took the breath away. The psychological effect that save will have on England cannot be overstated but it will pep the goalkeeper’s self-belief most of all.

3.James Rodríguez’s absence was felt in Columbia’s midfield

The loss of Bayern Munich midfielder James Rodríguez ahead of this fixture was nothing short of a disaster for Colombia. Not only did José Pékerman not include the 26-year-old playmaker in his starting XI, Rodríguez was marked as “absent” in the official team list, meaning he was not even fit enough to appear as a substitute.

In his absence, Cuadrado’s role changed greatly. Colombia’s right-back Santiago Arias was handed far more defensive responsibility than in the win over Senegal, meaning Cuadrado did not drop as deep in search of the ball. Instead, he hugged the right touchline. He coped with his task admirably well: passing the ball with greater accuracy (85.1 per cent), completing more dribbles (3) and drawing more fouls (2) than any of his team-mates. And yet he wasn’t Rodríguez.

4. Columbia were competitive but lacked discipline

The contrast between this game and England’s 1-0 defeat to Belgium in their final Group G fixture could not have been more stark in the first 30 minutes.

The suspicion last Thursday was the Three Lions were not too disappointed to lose that game and finish in second to take their place in the ‘easier’ half of the draw. On the evidence of this that was pretty close to the nail.

Southgate’s side were back to their best while Colombia pressed aggressively in the midfield, trying to force Henderson, Alli and co. into errors.

Trailing 1-0 the South Americans should have been focusing all their energies on finding an equaliser. Yet for much of the second half they committed more effort to try to disrupt England and the flow of the game.

As tactics go it isn’t the most aesthetically pleasing but it’s a legitimate approach – for lesser nations. This Colombia side possesses no lack of quality and even with star man James Rodríguez cheerleading from the stands (above) thanks to injury they had more than enough quality to make a game of it.

Above all it was a shame to see when the game had promised so much. Colombia had grown into the group stages with Radamel Falcao making up for missing out in 2014 with injury, supplemented by the guile and craft of Juan Quintero and Rodríguez behind him.

5. A strapping figure at 6ft 5ins, Mina used his strapping physique and intelligence to marshal England’s front two of Kane and Raheem Sterling.

There were, naturally, some underhand tactics employed by the Colombian No.13 but, alongside Tottenham Hotspur defender Davinson Sánchez, he handled Kane as well as anyone has in Russia.

He now has three World Cup goals and, unsurprisingly given his frame, is a menace from set pieces.
