Especially as the German were DESPERATE for a goal all through the match.

Muller came on with half an hour to go because Germany needed a goal.It was too little, too late.

Loew usually gets the calls right and knows exactly how to balance his side. With Ozil coming in an out, the same with Khadira and now Muller, in Russia, he got the selection of the team wrong time and again.

It will be interesting to see what will happen now with this team going forward.

2.VAR proves crucial for South Korea

Had VAR not been in existence, maybe Germany would have progressed into the next round.

Kim Young-gwon looked to have scored an offside goal late on and the linesman raised his flag to disallow it.

A check was made, and it was shown that Toni Kroos had played the ball and not a Korean player which therefore made the goal stand.

Who knows what would have happened had Germany got away with that one, but this proves why VAR is a great thing when used correctly.

3.Lack of finishing and quality forward haunted Germany

The expectation for Timo Werner at this competition was that it would propel him to stardom. He had been given the striker role for Germany after impressing in previous international games and for his club RB Leipzig.

Think of all the classic German strikers. Gerd Muller. Jurgen Klinsmann. Miroslav Klose.

Before this tournament, they thought they’d unearthed another in big, strong and brave Timo Werner. But it just hasn’t happened for the RB Leipzig striker, who has been tracked by all the Premier League giants.

In fact they had to turn to veteran Mario Gomez to try and turn the game round.

Despite all the promise and talk, yet it seemed that Werner was on a different radio-wave to the rest of his teammates as there was no cohesion.

Werner was given virtually no service and when he did get a chance, he often failed to hit the target.

Luckily for him, he can come back in four years and be better because of this experience. Either way, this has been a poor tournament for the 22-year-old.

4.South Korea deserves the credit for taking the game to Germany

Shin Tae-yong will have been delighted with his team today as they bounced back from two poor results with a phenomenal performance against Germany.

Defensively they were solid. At the other end, they were wasteful but did eventually make their chances pay with two goals.

Son Heung-min is said to be a summer target for Liverpool after excelling for Spurs in the Premier League last term.

And although he’s not got a vintage South Korean side around him – he’s still head and shoulders above the rest in Russia.

So what would Liverpool fans get if they were ever to prise him from Daniel Levy’s cool, dead hand?

Work rate, link up play, work rate, shooting boots, work rate and work rate. Oh, don’t forget work rate.

Young-gwon and Son Heung-min scored the crucial goals on the day and they will forever go down in South Korean football history.

Germany never had an answer for their organisation and a win was probably just about deserved for South Korea on the balance of play.

5.Defensively Germany looked vulnerable throughout the Group Stages

While we all may despair at how the Germans have essentially cheated death, their two World Cup matches against Mexico and Sweden have exposed dramatic weaknesses in defence. Inside the first 20 minutes, Germany were caught out at the back three times. As full-backs, Hector and Joshua Kimmich wandered forward, behind them emerged craters of space. Antonio Rudiger looked like he was watching the game on the big screen. Jerome Boateng looked out for an evening stroll.

The Swedes didn’t have to quietly sneak through the backdoor. They didn’t need tonnes of quality either. The front door was thrust open by the Germans – and they waltzed straight through. They may as well have held them a party. First Emil Forsberg walked through the split centre-halves, only to be held back, perhaps illegally. Then Marcus Berg had a go, the cumbersome 6ft Al Ain penetrated the box, only to be pushed to the floor by Boateng. It should have been a penalty.

Moments later the Swedes were in front. Toivonen this time had somehow slipped past Rudiger after being impeccably found by Viktor Claesson. He dinked a stranded, exposed Manuel Neuer. Boateng, meanwhile was closer to the touchline than his defensive partner.

Germany has been knocked out of the Group Stages of the World Cup 2018.
