In 2017, he has become Alkmaar’s biggest threats with 23 goals and assists in total, incredible numbers for a player who isn’t considered a striker.

The winger didn’t just blaze a path through the Eredivisie, but also helped Iran to secure a spot in the 2018 World Cup. If he continues his current form, there is no doubt he will be one of Carlos Queiroz’s key men in Russia.

Since his arrival in 2012 from Dutch side VVV Venlo, Maya Yoshida has been a constant on the Southampton back line, even contributing at the far end with an occasional goal or assist. The club recognized his improvement and dedication over the last five years, giving him a new three-year contract that will see the 31-year-old remain at St Mary’s through 2020.

Yoshida remains the first choice for Japan head coach Vahid Halilhodzic at centre-back, having earned his 80th cap for the Samurai Blue. It’s not a stretch to say that his international future could continue past Russia to the 2019 Asian Cup UAE and beyond.

Son Heung-min is surely the biggest football star in Korea since Cha Bum-kun and Park Ji-sung. Having recorded 21 goals and seven assists in 47 games last season, the Tottenham No. 7 also placed 14th in the “Premier League Power Rankings” for the 2016-17 season.

In the second half of 2017, the 25-year-old player has developed his forte including technicality, finishing, and speed. With his ability to use both feet, the versatile attacker has appeared in 25 games and scored nine goals, four of which came in four consecutive December appearances. If he finds more consistency in his performances, Son has the potential to become the best striker in Asian footballing history.

What do you think of our selections?
