Following Kiatisuk Senamuang quit as the national team’s head coach, Football Association of Thailand (FAT) is in search for someone to fill the vacancy.<\/p>\n

Thai FA President Somyot Poompunmuang has already expressed FAT’s preference to appoint a coach who has successfully helped a country to the World Cup finals before.<\/p>\n

Here are seven candidates who could enter the race to be the next Thailand’s head coach, according to Thai media.<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0Alejandro Sabella<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2014, Sabella helped Argentina advance beyond the quarterfinal of the World Cup for the first time since 1990, only to lose against Germany in the final.<\/p>\n

At the club level, he managed Estudiantes from 2009 to 2011, winning the Argentine Primera Divisi\u00f3n Apertura championship and the 2009 Copa Libertadores.<\/p>\n

Sabella is currently unemployed following his resignation from the Argentina’s national team after the 2014 World Cup.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0Takeshi Okada<\/strong><\/p>\n

Takeshi Okada took Japan to their first ever World Cup appearance in 1998, before moving on to Consadole Sapporo (1999\u20132001) and Yokohama F. Marinos (2003\u20132006).<\/p>\n

Okada returned to the national team for a second stint between 2007 and 2010. This time he gained worldwide attention for leading Japan to a ninth-place finish in the 2010 World Cup.<\/p>\n

The 60-year-old is unemployed after resigning from Hangzhou Greentown in 2013.<\/p>\n

3. Claudio Ranieri<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Italian’s most famous success was to lead Leicester City to become the champions of Premier League last season. Ranieri, however, was sacked in February 2017 after poor performances leaving the club just one point above the relegation zone.<\/p>\n

Ranieri has only managed a national team once, but he was relieved of his duties with Greece after just four games.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0Makoto Teguramori<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the 2016 AFC U-23 Championship held in Qatar, Makoto Teguramori managed Japan U-23 to win the tournament for the first time, thus qualifying to join Rio 2016 as the champions of Asia.<\/p>\n

In Rio 2016, his U-23 squad obtained as many as four points at the group stage, nonetheless ending up at only the third place behind Nigeria U-23 and Colombia U-23 in Group B.<\/p>\n

Teguramori currently works as an assistant coach for Japanese national team.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0Winfried Sch\u00e4fer (German – 67 years old)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The former Thai national team head coach from 2011 to 2013 is widely tipped to take the helm again after Kiatisuk’s decision to quit.<\/p>\n

Sch\u00e4fer’s most recent job was with Jamaica, who reached the Final of 2015 Gold Cup after beating tournament favorites the United States.<\/p>\n

Sch\u00e4fer’s Jamaica also put in an incredible performance at the 2015 Copa America, where they lost to regional powers Argentina and Uruguay by a single goal each.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0Totchtawan Sripan (Thai – 45 years old)<\/strong><\/p>\n

One of the greatest midfielders of Thailand,\u00a0Totchtawan Sripan was capped 110 times by the national team and scored 19 goals. He is the four-time SEA Games champion (1993, 1995, 1997, 1999) and three-time\u00a0ASEAN Football Championship winner (1996, 2000, 2002).<\/p>\n

Totchtawan is the current head coach of Muangthong, a post he has held since January 2016. He won a league and cup double in 2016, before winning the Thailand Champions Cup in 2017.<\/p>\n

The 45-year-old is believed to be FAT’s first choice for the national team head coach position. However, he has reportedly turned down an offer to coach the War Elephants from FAT.<\/p>\n

6.\u00a0Dragan Talaji\u0107<\/strong><\/p>\n

A former goalkeeper, Talaji\u0107 made his name as a coach by winning various titles with clubs in the\u00a0Middle East and Thailand.<\/p>\n

At the age of 39, Talaji\u0107 won the AFC Champions League 2004 in his first match as a manager of Al-Ittihad (KSA). He later won a quadruple (FA Shield, Super Cup, League, FA Cup) with\u00a0Al-Wahdat in 2010-2011.<\/p>\n

Talaji\u0107’s most recent managerial stint was with Thai outfit Muangthong United, where he finished runners-up in the Thai Premier League and Thai FA Cup.<\/p>\n
