<\/p>\nThailand recently made it to the final qualification round for the 2018 World Cup with the brave 2-2 draw against Iraq in Tehran. Apart from the aforementioned draw, here are the six biggest results in the World Cup for Southeast Asian football history, with the likes of Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore all claimed (unlikely) victories against Asia’s top teams.<\/p>\n

1. Thailand 3-0 Oman (World Cup 2014 qualification)<\/strong><\/p>\n In the qualification\u00a0four years ago, Thailand were part of Group D alongside with Australia, Saudi Arabia and Oman.\u00a0Going into the final game of the group, the War Elephants would have progressed had they won in Oman.<\/p>\n The 3-0 win was tremendous and came just days after the team suffered a defeat at the hands of the Australians. The game ended 2-1 for Australia, but a tiring Thailand only lost in the last minute.<\/p>\n Sompong Soleb broke the deadlock for the home side in the 35th minute before Muang Thong United striker Teerasil Dangda followed up his opener against Australia last Thursday with his second in as many 2014 World Cup qualifying matches four minutes from the interval.<\/p>\n Rashid Al Farsi summed up the disappointing game for Oman by putting the ball into his own net one minute into added time.<\/p>\n The Thais, however, finish fourth in Group D with 4 points and couldn’t make it out of the third round.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 2. Thailand 3-0 United Arab Emirates (World Cup 2006 qualification)<\/strong><\/p>\n Group leader United Arab Emirates came to Bangkok for the penultimate match of Group 5, and an away win would have put them in a very strong position.<\/p>\n Nontapan Jeansatawong’s only international goal opened the score for the home side\u00a0before Anon Nanok doubled the tally and the legendary Therdsak Chaiman was there to seal a famous win.<\/p>\n The War Elephants finished third in Group 5 with 7 points from 6 matches, behind North Korea (11 points) and UAE (10 points), and didn’t qualify for the third round.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 3. Lebanon 1-2 Thailand (World Cup 2002 qualification)<\/strong><\/p>\n It was the home draw with Lebanon in Bangkok that sent Thailand into the final round, but this battling away win in Beirut was the reason why a draw was sufficient.<\/p>\n Peter Withe’s men produced a miracle and came from behind to victory. Seskan\u00a0Piturat equalized before current coach of the national team Kiatisuk Senamuang scored the winner for Thailand.<\/p>\n The War Elephants earned their place in the final round with this historic win, the first Southeast Asian nation to achieve this feat since Indonesia in 1986.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 4. Singapore 1-0 Qatar (World Cup 1994 qualification)<\/strong><\/p>\n Singapore had quite a talented squad in the mid-1990s and one would dare to dream what could have happened if their qualifying group didn’t contain a tough North Korean team.<\/p>\n Still, there was the memorable 1-0 home win against eventual group runners-up Qatar. The scorer of the only goal with six minutes on the clock was none other than the legendary Fandi Ahmad.<\/p>\n The Singapore team of that year ended up third in their Group with 10 points after 8 games, just behind North Korea (15 points) and Qatar (11 points).<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 5. Malaysia 1-0 South Korea (World Cup 1986 qualification)<\/strong><\/p>\n It’s not like the way it used to be, but Malaysia and Korea\u00a0had some good old clashes back in the 70’s and 80’s. The 1986 World Cup qualifier between the pair saw the Southeast Asian side rose to victory.<\/p>\n Just after halftime and in front of a vibrant crowd at the Merdeka Stadium, Dollah Salleh picked up the ball on the right, cut inside and then blasted it home from outside the area.<\/p>\n There was much to be said about Malaysia, who came close to advance to the second round by finishing second in Group 3A with 5 points from 4 matches, just 1 point behind South Korea. The East Asia side had the last laugh, however, and were the ones on the plane to Mexico<\/p>\n <\/p>\n 6. Indonesia 1-0 Australia (World Cup 1982 qualification)<\/strong><\/p>\n Socceroo coach Les Scheinflug fielded some youngsters for the World Cup qualifier in Jakarta and\u00a0came to regrets after 90 minutes when his side was defeated 1-0.<\/p>\n Herry Risdianto scored the only goal of the game just two minutes before time to end Australia’s chances of qualifying for Spain.
