The 2019 Thai football season has drawn its curtains, meaning that our attention has turned to a flood of transfer rumors, speculation and gossip.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Thai transfer window will be open between the 11th of November 2019 and the 3rd of February 2020. But as we all know, many clubs have already made their moves, and some even manage to close big deals ahead of time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apart from Chiangrai United (T1 winner) and Port FC (FA Cup winner) who will have the AFC Champions League – BG Pathum United is another club that needs to be attentive with their recruitment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Judging by the 13-point gap, it’s safe to say the Thai League 2 champions is by far the strongest side amongst the second-tier teams. BG is expected to thrive in the top flight next year but making the step-up will require a big effort – underestimating this fact could be a costly mistake. Here are 3 things the Rabbits must consider before diving head-first into the market and pre-season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a01 – If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!<\/b><\/h3>\n

Winning promotion back to the top-tier with a 13-point gap is undeniably a fantastic achievement. The quality is there and the spine of this team should be kept together. Spanish midfielder Toti, who joined in 2015, just signed a 2-year contract extension with the team while striker Barros Tardeli and defender Irfan Fandi were guaranteed to continue with the club by chairman Pavin Bhirombhakdi.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Playing in a more advanced role, Chaowat Weerachat enjoyed his highest-scoring season (6) and no other BGPU player notch up more minutes than him. Tardeli terrorized opposition defenses all year long with this pace and trickery – netting 18 goals to come second in the T2 Golden Boot race. The Brazilian forward was T2 topscorer in 2018 with Trat FC and followed head coach Dusit Chalermsan to the LEO Stadium. BGPU (or Bangkok Glass FC as they were previously known) were famous for deploying deadly target men, such as Chatree Chimtale, who preyed on chances inside the penalty area. However, Tardeli’s arrival has complete transformed the way BGPU attack and I see no reason for adjustments.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2018, the club’s experiment to pair the mobile Ariel Rodr\u00edguez with the more physical striker – either Surachat Sareepim, Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Mendy or Chatree Chimtale – in a narrow 4-4-2 formation failed horribly. It looks like they have learned from their mistakes. Keep the quick, free-flowing attacks. Keep Chaowat as the heart of midfield. Add to what you have. No need to overhaul the whole setup.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

2 – Don’t get giddy with big names.<\/b><\/h3>\n

Speaking of forcing players into a system, the club mustn’t get giddy with big names available in the market. The whole league was shocked when BGPU was relegated at the end of 2018 and many fans are expecting the club to showcase their wealth, making a statement for the comeback.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, although it’s a cliche, a successful football team is always more than the sum of its parts.\u00a0 In their last T1 season, Thai football maverick, Mario Gjurovski was snatched up from Bangkok United. Needing to be the star of the team, there were rumors of Gjurovski clashing with captain Matt Smith. Whether the gossip is true or not, nobody knows – but the fact remains that Gjurovski struggled to settle.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Upfront, Stipe Plazibat, a proven goalscorer Hougang United and Home United, and big man Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Mendy were brought in from the S League and K League respectively, but neither fit in with head coach Josep Ferr\u00e9’s direction and failed to make any real impact at all.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This time, Mr.Pavin recently made it clear that, if the club receives no buying offers for Thitipan Puangchan, the midfielder, now on-loan at J1 League side Oita Trinita, he will return to BGPU.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The box-to-box Thitipan will be a surely improvement on the already competitive BGPU midfield option. Add to that the transfer speculation regarding Charyl Chappuis, which is gaining traction, and the rumors of another “senior Thai International” midfielder and you can see that the club is trying the snatch what they can.<\/span><\/p>\n

Head coach Dusit Chalermsan once pointed to the squad’s lack of natural wingers as his reason for playing a back three and using the wing-backs to provide width. Chakrit Laptrakul’s flair down the flanks was a much welcome asset following his return from Japanese side Tokushima Vortis. The worrying sign is that, so far, BGPU is yet to be linked with winger. Chakrit alone won’t be enough.<\/span><\/p>\n

Brazilian center-back, Victor Cardozo, of the disbanded PTT Rayong is another Thai League superstar heavily linked with a move to BGPU. Just like Thitipan and Chappuis, Victor Cardozo would make a great addition to the squad based on his quality alone but the real question is; how many, T1 starter grade, centrebacks does BGPU need?<\/span> Maybe a Thai League-proven winger or other area Dusit wants strengthen would be a more worthwhile investment.<\/span><\/p>\n

3 – Use the Pre-season for what it is…a Pre-season\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

The BGPU management admitted that, in hindsight, a poor 2018 pre-season played a massive part in the club’s relegation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Former Adelaide United boss Aurelio Vidmar left since July 2017 but it wasn’t until late November that Josep Ferr\u00e9 was officially confirmed as the new man in charge even though he was already working as Vidmar’s assistant beforehand.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If the club truly had faith in Ferr\u00e9’s vision, the Spanish coach would’ve been given the job right after Vidmar’s departure. The club’s seemingly last-minute pre-season fixture announcement didn’t give the fans much confidence.\u00a0 Khonkaen FC, BGs feeder club from T2, completely outplayed and knocked the Rabbits out of the LEO pre-season cup – a friendly tournament organized by BG’s biggest sponsor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This result and the unforgivable performance had the supporters raging. We later found out that the players had only arrived for training just a little over a week before the humiliating defeat. The pre-season prioritized sponsorship over football and it had a negative effect on the pitch.<\/span><\/p>\n

Back to the present, BGPU seems to be getting down to business straight after the title celebration. Head coach Dusit Chalermsan contract was deservedly extended last week and with that, guaranteed key players such as Toti, Barros Tardeli and Irfan Fandi will be staying. On top of that, Filipino international centre-back \u00c1lvaro Silva and midfield terrier Yuki Bambi will also join from Suphanburi FC and Trat FC. That’s two players with T1 experience to add further quality and depth to the squad.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dusit proved at the beginning of last season that he can organize an effective pre-season as evidence by BGPU’s 9 wins from the first 10 league games. Training ground hours must be available for Dusit and less of congested friendlies with other interests in mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Getting knocked out off 2 domestic cup competition by Bangkok United and Chiangrai United isn’t the worst result but most importantly it serves as a valuable reminder of the standards of top-flight football – something BGPU will aspire to match. The team must play with a higher intensity level and the only way to keep up is to prepare well and have a strong pre-season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
