South Korea faced Mexico in the second round of the group stage on 23 June.<\/span><\/p>\n

Mexico wanted to secure their spot in the round of 16 by adding three points; Korea as well had to win to stay hopeful.<\/span><\/p>\n

Both teams were rather well-matched. However, Korea had to pay price for Jang Hyun-soo’s\u00a0reckless foul as he conceded a spot kick. Carlos Vela manged to convert it, followed by Javier Hernandez’s goal.<\/p>\n

South Korea’s star Son Heung-min pulled one back before the final whistle, but with this defeat, it is not very likely for Korea to proceed to the next round.<\/p>\n

Football Tribe Korea would like to review what has changed and what has not.<\/p>\n

\u25b6 Korea’s tactics<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Only few people expected Korea to manage to survive in this group. Especially after the match against Sweden, who are considered\u00a0not as strong as the other two, Shin Tae-yong\u00a0would have thought Korea should focus\u00a0on offense rather than defense.<\/p>\n

Shin chose a 4-4-2 formation to utilise their speed. It was completely different from how they were\u00a0against Sweden, when Korea recorded no attempt on target. This time, Korea managed to have some crucial opportunities too.<\/p>\n

Defense was very tight, as well, or tough; East Asia’s side received four yellow cards, showing they were not afraid of committing the fouls.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

However, this decision ended up giving a penalty kick. No conversion of opportunity did not turn out very well, either.<\/p>\n

\u25b6 Penalty kicks in two matches in a row<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Not many teams have conceded spot kicks in two World Cup games\u00a0consecutively. Denmark\u00a0this year are one of them; Korea are another.<\/p>\n

But two teams are in different situations.<\/p>\n

Denmark managed to earn four points in the last two games, and are likely to make it to the tournament, while Korea’s commitment of fouls in the box resulted in Korea’s defeat.<\/p>\n

2018 Russia World Cup for Korea might not be remembered so fondly with two penalty kicks in the group stage.<\/p>\n

It’s hard to imagine the pressure the national team players get. It will be even tougher for someone\u00a0who’s considered a key player. Why else would Neymar cry after the victory?<\/p>\n

Korea’s key player is Son Heung-min, Tottenham Hotspurs’ number 7. However, he had not made a single attempt on target against Sweden. The team played defensively, but it is not the best\u00a0record for a forward to hold.<\/p>\n

Against Mexico, however, Son has changed. His performance with the speed and positioning was impressive. Just before the final whistle, Son\u00a0scored a wonder goal.
