The friendly between Poland and South Korea resulted in the host’s 3:2 victory. Robert Levandowski and Kamil Grosicki found the net\u00a0in the first half. South Korea’s Lee Chang-min and Hwang Hee-chan managed to score on 85 and 87 minutes respectively and evened the score, but conceded the last minute winning goal.\u00a0<\/span>Football Tribe Korea analyses problems the team is facing currently.<\/p>\n

1. Unstable defense<\/b><\/p>\n

South Korea again exposed their weakness, which is\u00a0unsolid defense. Korea’s head coach Shin Tae-yong\u00a0played with three defenders at the back to overcome this, but it did not worked out well yet.<\/p>\n

With this formation, Korea held a numerical advantage in a defensive situation, but that was it. Three defenders were not organised\u00a0and did not seem to communicate with each other well enough, leading to frequent mistakes. Korea’s central defender Hong Jeong-ho especially missed the ball in the 35th minute and right before the final whistle, which allowed a good opportunity for Poland to\u00a0make a counter attack.<\/p>\n

It didn’t take long for Shin to realise a 3-4-3 formation was not right for the team. He gave up a 3-4-3 formation by replacing Kim Min-jae with another\u00a0forward, Hwang Hee-chan.<\/p>\n

2. Fruitless attack<\/b><\/p>\n

Poland scored three goals rather easily. While the fundamental reason is that South Korea\u00a0conveyed\u00a0a problem in defense, another reason could be\u00a0from attack.<\/p>\n

South Korea didn’t seem to play as planned. Son Heung-min and Lee Jae-sung made chances to counterattack, but the gap between defenders and forwards was too wide for passes to be accurate. Defenders were too busy passing the ball to forwards, but did not utilise\u00a0teammates well enough. This allowed Poland to intercept and counterattack.<\/p>\n

Poland’s attack became dull after Levandowski was substituted out. Korea used this opportunity by deploying more forwards and attacking midfielders. While it helped Korea dominate the game in the second half, finishing could be better.\"\"<\/p>\n

3. Is the 4-4-2 formation an answer?<\/b><\/p>\n

South Korea put in good performances against Serbia and Columbia with the 4-4-2 formation.<\/p>\n

The 4-4-2 formation causes exhaustion; however, it allows stronger pressing and\u00a0speedy counterattacks.<\/p>\n

The FIFA World Cup is a short-term competition. It is better to have a well-prepared A than to have mediocre plan B and C. Shin was trying to test a plan B by using the 3-4-3 formation to overcome the weakness in a defense. But so far, Korea played better when attacking, not focusing on defending.<\/p>\n

It is time to choose between change and stability, but surely, there is not much time left for Shin.<\/p>\n
