Indonesian goalkeeper Choirul Huda passes away after collision

Persela Lamongan goalkeeper and captain Choirul Huda has passed away after colliding with his team-mate Ramon Rodrigues.

The incident happened when the 38-year-old was playing for Persela against Semen Padang in the Indonesian Liga 1 at Surajaya Stadium Lamongan on Sunday.

Huda was struck in the chest in his attempt to reach the ball and fell unconscious shortly after the collision with the Brazilian defender just before half-time.

Medical staff immediately rushed onto the pitch to his aide, but sadly the shot-stopper succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead at 5.15pm local time at dr Soegiri Regional General Hospital in Lamongan.

Dr Zaki Mubarok of the hospital later confirmed that Huda had died as result of head and neck trauma.

“He passed away because collision in the head and behind the neck,” he told reporters.

Huda was considered one of the best goalkeepers in Indonesia and a legend for Persela, where he spent his entire career since making professional debut in 1999.
