Melbourne City goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen retires

Experienced goalkeeper Thomas Sorensen has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 41.

The former Denmark international ends his career after two seasons with Melbourne City in A-League, where he was named the league’s goalkeeper of the year in his first season.

“It’s with great pride and a little bit of sadness, that I today officially announce my retirement from professional football,” Sorensen wrote on his Instagram.

“It’s been an amazing journey with so many people to thank. Family, friends, clubs, coaches, players and fans, thank you.”

Sorensen, who played 101 times for his country, previously played in the English Premier League for Sunderland, Aston Villa and Stoke, making more than 400 appearances.

He plans to stay in Australia after retirement and will complete a charity bike ride in the country which will see him ride 3,500km in total next year.
