AFC Cup: Home United advance to knockout stage after thumping victory

Singapore outfit Home United defeated Myanmar National League side Yadanarbon FC 4-1 in Group H of the AFC Cup at Jalan Besar Stadium on Tuesday.

The result means the S.League side win the group and qualify for the knockout stage after four games with nine points. Yadanarbon are second with four points from three games while at the bottom with one point is Than Quang Ninh.

The Singapore side was in total control and sealed the fate of the match with three first-half goals.

The Home goals came via Afiq Yunos, Faris Ramli, Irfan Fandi and Adam Swandi. Defender Sithu Aung scored late in the first half for Yadanarbon but the visitors could not find a way back into the match.

The match also saw three red cards brandished for violent conduct. Yadanarbon’s Yan Paing and Home’s Sirina Camara were both sent off in the first-half, and Yadanarbon were reduced to nine men when Ye Ko Oo was shown a red card at the end of the game.

In Group A, Al Jaish and Al Zawaraa knock out opponents and book themselves a place in the zonal semi-finals.

Al Jaish beat Al Ahli 2-1, courtesy of a Zakira Kadoor first-half brace. The defender first scored with a header in the 22nd minute and doubled his tally 20 minutes later.

Al Zawaraa would have to thank Al Suwaiq’s Hassan Al Saadi after the defender deflected the ball into his own net, giving Al Zawaraa the important three points.

Meanwhile, in the Group B clash, Air Force Club beat Safa 2-0 to keep their hopes alive of reaching the next stage.

An own goal by Ali Al Saadi in the 28th minute and a penalty from Amjad Radhi ten minutes later proved to be the difference between the two teams.

Finally, Tajikistan’s Istiklol showed their strength and came out on top after beating FC Alay 3-1. The result sees them move to the top of Group D thanks to goal difference.
