Ange Postecoglou: Tim Cahill no longer guaranteed to make final squad for qualifiers

Australia national team head coach Ange Postecoglou has named Tim Cahill in the preliminary 30-man squad for this month’s crucial World Cup qualifiers, showing his faith for the veteran striker.

However, the 51-year-old manager also admitted that Cahill, along with two or three other regulars are not guaranteed to make the Socceroos final 23-man squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.

The 37-year-old Tim Cahill played just 49 minutes of professional football last month for Melbourne City and didn’t play in the club’s 3-2 victory over Central Coast last week.

“It is a concern, You want all your players playing regularly. I thought Timmy would have had more game time over the last couple of weeks”, Postecoglou said.

“We’ll see how they go over the weekend, but it’s unlikely all four will make it if they don’t play significant minutes over the weekend,” the manager added.

Australia will take on Iraq in Tehran on March 23 and the UAE in Sydney five days later.
